Dr Martin Barasa is currently serving as the Regional Head of Programs for VSF Germany, based at Nairobi and overeseeing programs across Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan. Martin previously worked for VSF Suisse in South Sudan in various capacities, the last four years (September 2014 to Aprril 2018) as the Country Director South Sudan. Martin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Masters Degree in Development Studies from St Pauls University, Limuru, Kenya. Martin has over 20 years of experience in humanitaroan assistance and development aid cutting across mutilple sectors funded by vairous donors namely; ECHO, EU, SDC, USAID/OFDA, BMZ, GIZ, German Federal Foreign Office, FAO, UNICEF, UNDP, IOM and the World Bank.
Martin has solid experience in the fields of agricultural and livestock production system and extension services, value chain development and marketing systems and natural resource management in agro-pastoral areas. Martin has strong familiarity with the Project Management Cycle and M&E frameworks and systems; management of contractual services and works, management and coordination of partnerships, advocacy and policy development initiaitves with local, national, and regional institutions.
Martin is experiencede in rural development approaches and appraisal techniques, including participatory epidemiology techniques, community particpatiory evaluation techniques, capacity building initiatives, cooperatives and rural enterprises development. Martin is an accomplished trainer and has led the development of several training manuals for the training of frontline animal health service providers in the pastoral and agropastroal areas. He is also a trainer of trainers on Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards.
